Dunoon is a beautiful Scottish seaside town located on the Cowal peninsula. The town formed around an historic castle on the river Clyde some 30 miles west of Glasgow.
Dunoon rapidly expanded in the Victorian era as paddle steamers and train connections enabled people to holiday, commute and take day trips to the area from Glasgow.
From 1961 the stunning Holy Loch just outside of Dunoon was the site of the United States Navy's Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) Refit Site. This controversial cold war base housed hundreds of American Navy personnel and their families and also provided employment and opportunities to local people. When the base closed in 1992 the fragile local economy took a downturn and for many years people have been trying to redefine and develop the Dunoon area, mainly as a tourist destination.
With a beach in the town and multiple beaches and forests around nearby villages, the area has a multitude of natural assets. The town also boasts Scotland’s last remaining large timber pier, the historic Dunoon Castle site, a fantastic community-run museum, Dunoon Burgh Hall arts centre and an attractive local high street. To top it all, the Dunoon community is amazing - resourceful, warm, friendly, funny and caring.
The Dunoon Area Green Map project aims to help local people and visitors connect to and make use of these social, cultural and environmental assets.
The project is led by the design and research agency Tacit-Tacit, a local enterprise on a mission to support #positivegrowth working in partnership with the Dunoon Community Development Trust.
