We are so lucky in Dundee to be surrounded by copious, healthy woodland. We wanted to learn a bit more about using wood so the wonderful Kiri Stone, Woodswoman, came along to deliver a workshop using local Birch wood. We were shown how to make a beautiful and unique mushroom.
The process involves sharp knives so we had a bit of a safety briefing first. Always sit well away from other people so that if your knife slips you are not going to injure anyone else! The knives we used were made by 'Mora' from a company called Springfields. They come in a protective sheath. We also used small folding wood saws, the brand we used was 'Gorilla' but there are lots of makes available. It's always worth buying the best quality tool you can afford.
We talked about the best time of year to work with wood and that carving is easier in the spring and summer months when the wood is growing. It is much drier and harder in the Winter.
Always ask permission from the landowner before cutting wood for carving.
The photos show the various stages of the carving. There are lots of online videos too if you search for Green wood Work. We had loads of fun doing this and it is a very mindful activity.
When the mushroom is finished let it dry in a warm area for a week or so. Then once it is dry oil it well with a light vegetable oil or olive oil. This prevents cracking. Stand back and admire your handiwork!
